I love a story where someone is down on her luck, she changes, works hard and comes out of it in a fulfilling way. I was surprised and admired what Sophia did early in the book when a group of locals confronted her at a meeting. And I loved what she did at the end of the book regarding the locals.

One reviewer felt this story was too sad. I didn’t mind because the heroine was on a journey and I felt hope and anticipation for her. She was improving herself.

STORY BRIEF:
Sophia’s husband Skip was like Bernie Madoff. Everyone who invested with him lost their money. Skip died while fleeing the country. All remaining assets were seized by the FBI: bank accounts, cars, etc. Sophia has no cash other than what’s in her purse. She has no way to support herself or her daughter. At the request of a compassionate friend Ted offers her a job as his housekeeper.

#2 When Snow Falls - It was hard to feel hope or anticipation. Chey would not allow herself to act on her feelings. She kept her feelings “secret” for most of the book.

3rd choice:
The main plot was one character keeping a “secret” for most of the book. I did not enjoy the lies. In some stories I did not like the reasons for keeping the secret.

3 stars. #7 The Heart of Christmas - Hero is on the run from bad guys. When heroine asked questions he could have answered in generic terms but he was silent. That didn’t feel right to me.

4.5 Stars, Domestic violence, financial crisis amd increasing town hatred.

Easy, sometimes painful, to follow. Believable characters.
Informative and educational dialogue.

This story reiterates how common and easily trapped victims of domestic violence are.

The towns people descending like locusts and stripping Sophia and Alexia's home, including food, was disgusting and unfortunately realistic.

More information on bullying would be helpful.

I dropped my rating by .5 because
1) Was the money ever found?
2) Was the bullying Alexia was a victim of ever addressed by the school?
3) Did Sophia ever get help for the trauma from domestic violence?
4) Why did Sophia marry Skip, did he rape her, deliberately get her pregnant?

The Whiskey Creek series are stand-alone's.
I will re-read this book and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, works by this author.
Sophia has paid the price for "mean girl" reputation. Her husband has disappeared and then found dead. He was running from the FBI who was investigating him. He was a crook and bilked the investors from Whiskey Creek as well as other places. Sophia has nothing left. She must try to get a job and try to keep Alexa her daughter from finding out about her father. She is the target of all the people that her husband has bilked. They want what she has and will stop at nothing to get it. Especially the police chief. He takes all Sophia's jewels even though he didn't invest hardly anything. His girlfriend however invested her whole inheritance and he wants Sophia to pay for this. He even wants her to sell her eggs to get money. A despicable being is never found.

Ted Dixon is in need of a housekeeper. He doesn't really think that Sophia could do it, but he gives her the job. Then he lets her move into his guest house so she won't live in her house which has not heat and no furniture. The townspeople didn't even leave her with silverware so she could eat. Ted thinks he may "hook" up with Eve. They do on Halloween, but it isn't working for Ted. Eve wants it to work she thinks they could have it all. But, Ted soon finds out that he still is in love with Sophia. When Ted breaks it off with Eve, she is hurt but knows that Ted wasn't really there for her. Sophia however feels awful that Eve had been hurt. In the end, when Sophia receives news that she may have some money after all, she decides to give it back to some of the citizens of Whiskey Creek. Not the Police Chief because he has already gotten more than he deserves. She does however give a check to his ex-girlfriend. The Police Chief finds out and want more money from Sophia. Ted and Sophia take a stand and tapes the chief threatening them. He then looses his job and will not be bothering them again. Ted and Sophia end up together. Even Ted's mother has finally come around. She likes Alexa after all and finds that she can have an instant "granddaughter". I love all of The Whiskey Creek stories. I can't wait for Eve's story which should be out soon.
