One of the best books I've read in a long time. The characters were beautifully brought to life with the description of their physical and spiritual essence. The story took so many different twist and turns that I couldn't put it down. Literally right up until the last page. It was a great read and I would highly recommend it

The story unfolds in an old antique shop where a young couple is purchasing some antiques from the old man running the store. They stop to admire is solid gold time piece that he is wearing and ask if it is for sale. He says no, it will never be for sale and then he starts to tell the story of where the watch came from.

This novel is set in the Depression Era, in a small town. Dr. Kincaid brings a Mr. Rainwater to Ella Barron’s boarding house to rent a room. She knows nothing about him except that he is a bit pushy and while she is alone Dr. Kincaid tells her that he is dying and doesn't have too long to live.

This story is bittersweet and detailed some harsh times that took place during that Era, but it is a wonderful story and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes historical novels.
Rainwater is the best novel I've read in a long time. The storyline captured me from the beginning and held my interest till the very last page. Sandra Brown has a unique writing technique that made the characters feel genuine and the story actually happened. My husband prefers biographies but I urged him to read it and he had the same conclusion as me. Kudos Sandra Brown!
Over years of enduring boring historical novel tomes, slash and crash tough guy former SEAL et al Chuck Norris type tripe and slogging through cop stories, eventually each genre begins to sound the same...because they ARE the same!

Now comes a writer who moves out of her comfort zone of cop stories to write something of value and thoroughly entertaining. Rainwater has depth, emotion, action, romance and an awakening to a (then) unknown childhood problem Autism.

Set in Depression Era Texas (Ms. Brown calls the town Gilead, but from other references to the region, it would seem the town is actually Goliad. Don't know why she wouldn't use the real name.), readers are transported back to the hard times of rural living, bigotry, lynching, arson, and the ever present redneck mentality as fostered by one of the characters who is a member of the town's more well off families.

This isn't a cop story. It isn't a story about a former something macho guy who cleans out the town single handedly. It isn't a story whose dialog is made up mostly of variations of the F word (a sure sign that a writer has little talent). It's a beautiful story, a moving story, a story of love, hate and other emotions in a town where times are hard and people are struggling. Some have likened it to Grapes of Wrath...the era yes, but otherwise not quite (Grapes of Wrath was sorely off base geographically as far as its Oklahoma locale and where the so-called Dust Bowl impacted. Don't think Steinbeck ever visited the state.)

If you're tired of the same old themes, read Rainwater. Yes, it's emotional. Yes, it's sad. Yes, it's haunting. And yes it's a good read!
A bit more sedate than normal, but still a sensual romance told as a glimpse into the dust bowl, and depression era. Includes visual impact on simple every day lives suffered by small town people, family farms, ranches and the poor. Tinged with racial and social inequality, Sandra shows a remarkable insight into how a few people braved these intolerances to help those less fortunate, accept them as individuals deserving understanding, and love. She does all of this with her twist and turns that unfold at the end, not only about the story, but the story teller!
I loved how this story unfolded, with the opening acting like someone telling a story, without it seeming like one.

I felt as if I was in the time period, where I rooted for the townspeople, and frustrated at the injustices committed.

The ending was what made me really love the book. I, highly, recommend reading this!
Sandra Brown has always been one of my favorite authors so I took a chance on reading a book set during the Great Depression. Who else could have woven such a beautiful love story while giving so many horrible incidents that could have happened during that period in history.
There was only a hint of the big surprise in the epilogue.
This is another wonderful Sandra Brown book! The story revolves around a woman who ran a boarding house and a gentleman who came to stay there as he was dying. Mr. Rainwater was a good man who did not like racism and this was prevalent in the time this book was written. Ella and Mr Rainwater fell in love. Ella had a son who was terribly disabled, could not talk, and had violent fits yet with patience, Mr. Rainwater was able to get through to Solly, the son The book took place during the great depression, people were poor, racism was rampant and violent things occurred but Mr. Rainwater and the good people in this Texas town were able to stand up and be counted. Rainwater died in jail protecting his love.
