The Big Bankroll is a very good read about the life and times of Arnold Rothstein who set the stage for the likes of Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. Rothstein had a lot of "smarts" and never was convicted of a crime, even being involved with the heavy financing of narcotics toward the end of his career. He was killed, at age 46, subsequent to a big poker game where he was a heavy loser and hadn't paid off because the rumor was out that the game was fixed in order to fleece him. According to gambling author, John Scarne, who performed card tricks for Rothstein and his friends, this was indeed the case.

Great read, thanks to the author for a very interesting book.
Quality stuff in the style of a century past when newsmen were newsmen, and their approach to a good story was to give it the best they had, and they always seemed to have it! Rothstein was an enigma inside a mystery wrapped in unbelievable truth and Leo Katcher has captured all of it in a wonderful account of the man's life and activities
I highly recommend this book to those who want an in depth knowledge of the times in NYC near the turn of the century. Politics, social and economic landscape of the era are described. How Rothstein came to be. worked and thrived in that environment. Enjoy!
The "and times" part of the title is particularly relevant . This well written book really gives you the feeling of being there. This is a must read for anyone interested in the recent history of New York.
Interesting bio of a guy who keeps showing up in so many references to the prohibition era. Gotta say, however, that there are so many misspellings and typos in the digital version of this book that I suspect it was typed into the version by someone who does not actually speak English. This problem was very, very frustrating.
I really wanted to finish this book. I kept trying and I could only get to 46%. I never seen so many geographical and spelling errors. Normally you will get a few but these were so numerous and distracting that it just wasn't worth the effort.
